Kansas City, Missouri – With an extensive new green area called South Loop Park, Kansas City is set to improve its downtown area. The city council is currently reviewing an ordinance to finalize the construction management contract for the first phase of the park with Clarkson Construction and JE Dunn, a joint venture that combines local expertise and a robust history of regional projects.
Mayor Quinton Lucas expressed tremendous enthusiasm about the alliance. “With deep roots in our region and a track record of success shaping our skyline, roads, and bridges, Clarkson Construction and JE Dunn are long-time and trusted partners of Kansas City,” said Mayor Quinton Lucas in a news release. “I am excited to partner with them once again to deliver a world-class South Loop Park.”
The first phase of the park has also included a $450,000 professional services arrangement with ProjectFirst, LLC for comprehensive project management, thus underscoring the city’s dedication to rigorous control and quality in realizing the goal.
Above Interstate 670, South Loop Park will occupy 5.5 acres adding essential green space right in the middle of Kansas City. The project is intended to be a key venue for community involvement and economic development in addition to helping to reduce the environmental effects of urban infrastructure.
“South Loop Park is a transformative project that will redefine how we experience downtown Kansas City,” said Councilmember Crispin Rea, 4th District-at-large. “By creating a green space that bridges communities and fosters connectivity, we’re not just building a park — we’re investing in the future of our city and enhancing the quality of life for all who live, work, and visit here.”
“South Loop Park is a visionary project that will dramatically improve the livability and vibrancy of our downtown,” said Councilmember Eric Bunch, 4th District. “This park reflects our commitment to sustainable infrastructure, community connection, and creating a more equitable, people-centered urban environment.”

The vision for South Loop Park includes creating a world-class destination that emphasizes sustainability, inclusivity, and connectivity. Plans for the park focus on creating a friendly environment for both people living in the area and visitors with facilities and events reflecting the various needs and interests of the neighborhood.
“This park will be a game-changer for Kansas City, providing a vibrant gathering space, connecting communities, and showcasing our commitment to sustainability and innovation,” said City Manager Brian Platt. “The and Clarkson Construction and JE Dunn team brings unparalleled expertise, and we are eager to partner with them to bring this vision to life.”

Early this year, the city submitted a Request for Proposals (RFP) looking for suitable general contracting and construction management companies, therefore starting the process for the creation of the park. Based on a Best Value approach—which takes not only the financial aspect but also creative features and strategic benefit to the city—a panel including members from the Mayor’s Office, City Manager’s Office, and several city agencies selected Clarkson Construction and JE Dunn.
With approval, the city and the selected contractors will move forward with pre-construction activities, aiming to meet key construction milestones before the city hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2026. The timeline of events emphasizes the importance of the project not only as an urban improvement but also in more general planning for a global event projected to generate significant traffic and attention to Kansas City.
From design to construction, South Loop Park promises to revolutionize downtown Kansas City by transforming a section of freeway into a dynamic urban park that connects neighborhoods and drives creative development in the heart of the city.
