Kansas City, Missouri – After months of serving as the city’s interim City Auditor, Kansas City officials have named Marc Shaw as the city’s permanent City Auditor. The City Council agreed with Mayor Quinton Lucas’s request at a meeting last week.
Since February 2025, Shaw has been the City Auditor on an interim basis. During that time, city authorities noted he showed stable leadership and a clear focus on keeping an eye on the city’s finances. These qualities led to his permanent appointment.
His work in the interim post helped city leaders feel confident that he was the right person to keep leading the agency that reviews city operations and protects taxpayer money.
Mayor Lucas commended Shaw’s work history and professional background, saying that his experience running complicated initiatives and investigations made him a good fit for the job. The mayor stressed Shaw’s ability to find ways to save money and make things run more smoothly in big bureaucracies, saying that these talents were crucial for the city’s auditing work.

Shaw’s most recent job was as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, where he helped make sure that countries followed global arms control treaties and worked with other countries to deal with concerns concerning chemical and biological weapons.
Shaw used to run a $1.35 billion drug and law enforcement program and help carry out strategy for a $1.2 billion security assistance program. A lot of the time, his job was to make sure that programs followed the law and that federal spending rules were followed.
