Macy’s is closing dozens of stores nationwide. Kansas City Metro North Mall’s store is among them.

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Macy’s has announced that it will shutter its store at Kansas City’s Metro North Mall, marking another significant closure for the iconic department store chain as it grapples with declining sales. The store, located at 400 NW Barry Road, is expected to close its doors as early as next month, leaving Kansas City with only two Macy’s locations—both situated on the Kansas side of the metro area.

The move fits Macy’s larger “Bold New Chapter” approach, which aims to simplify processes and allocate resources to better-performing locations and digital platforms. Tony Spring, Macy’s chairman and CEO, claims that closing failing stores is not taken easily.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring.

The Metro North Mall shop marks the most recent in a series of Macy’s closings in the Kansas City area. The business closed its Lee’s Summit site and its store within Independence Center in past years. The closures mirror the changing retail scene as e-commerce giants compete fiercely with department stores and consumer behavior changes.

Starting later this month, liquidation discounts at Metro North Mall Macy’s are scheduled to last roughly six weeks. Before the store shuts permanently, the sales should attract consumers keen for bargains.

Macy’s will have no surviving outlets on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro region with this closing. Still, customers will be able to find Macy’s at Town Center Plaza in Leawood and Oak Park Mall in Overland Park. Both sites are in Kansas and regarded as better-performing stores; Macy’s intends to keep making investments in them based on their long-term development plan.

With plans to hire more salespeople and improve in-store interactions, Macy’s is concentrating on revamping 350 stores nationwide by 2026. Emphasizing its online presence as well, the company wants to give consumers, wherever they choose to buy, a flawless shopping experience.

“People have endless options when it comes to where and how they shop. Macy’s customers expect seamless shopping experiences and continuous improvements both in-store and online to meet those expectations,” Macy’s said in a statement.

The closing of Metro North Mall Macy’s is a sad reminder of the difficulties traditional stores encounter in a time where shopping online dominates. Although Macy’s keeps changing its approach to fit the needs of a digital-first environment, the loss of another big retailer from Kansas City’s Missouri side emphasizes the continuous change of the retail industry.

As shoppers bid farewell to this location, the future of retail in the area remains uncertain. But Macy’s dedication to modernizing its surviving locations and increasing its online presence points to the business’s determination to remain relevant in a fast-changing market.
