Kansas City, Missouri – Drivers in Lee’s Summit will see a revised traffic pattern on southbound Missouri Route 291 as utility work continues near the U.S. 50 interchange, part of a broader improvement effort that will reshape one of the area’s important travel corridors.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said the updated schedule now calls for a head-to-head traffic configuration on southbound MO 291 from Blue Parkway to SE Bayberry Lane. That setup is expected to begin Thursday, May 28, at 4 a.m. and remain in place until Monday, June 22, at 5 p.m., weather permitting. The dates were revised from the earlier May 19 through June 9 schedule.
The change is one of several traffic adjustments tied to ongoing utility work in the area. MoDOT has also noted that 7th Terrace, between MO 291 and the new Blue Parkway, remains closed. That closure began Monday, April 20, at 4 a.m. and is scheduled to continue until Monday, June 22, at 5 p.m.
Other restrictions are also still in effect near the interchange. The ramp from westbound U.S. 50 to MO 291 is closed, and left-turn movements from eastbound U.S. 50 to northbound MO 291 are also closed. These changes are part of the continuing work around MO 291 North and U.S. 50, where crews are preparing the area for larger improvements.

The utility work is connected to the Missouri Route 291 North and U.S. Route 50 Interchange Improvements project in Jackson County. The larger project includes bridge replacement, road realignment, and ADA improvements from SE 7th Terrace to SE Oldham Parkway in Lee’s Summit. MoDOT expects the full project to be completed in January 2027.
Transportation officials are reminding drivers to stay alert as they move through the area. Motorists are urged to slow down and pay close attention in work zones, especially because not all work zones look the same. Some involve moving operations such as striping, patching, or mowing, while others may include short-term lane closures for quick repairs or debris removal.
