Kansas City, Missouri – Often referred to as the “living room of Kansas City,” Kansas City’s Power & Light District is about to undergo major make-over. Local officials revealed a $10 million renovation project meant to revitalize the popular downtown area just in time for the Big 12 basketball events in March. Made at a press conference which included prominent business executives, Mayor Quinton Lucas, and KCMO Councilman Crispen Rea, the statement emphasizes the city’s commitment to maintain its reputation as a thriving entertainment and cultural center.
John Moncke, president of Power & Light, shared his vision at the event, highlighting the district’s impact on the city.
“This block alone had over six million visitors last year, which is equivalent to all the fans combined that went to home games for our local pro sports teams,” he said as reported by Startland News, underscoring the district’s role in drawing both national and international attention.
The centerpiece of the renovation is the KC Live! Block, which hosts lively events such the Hot Country Nights concert series, Super Bowl viewing, and FIFA World Cup celebrations. Plans call for a new canopy, ceiling heaters and misters, plus theater lighting and high-definition ribbon board upgrades. These improvements seek to improve the spectator experience, consequently transforming the district into an annual entertainment destination.
The addition of Mosaic, a nightclub that is a staple of the nightlife scene, will help further define the district. The facility will get a $2.5 million make-over almost doubling its capacity and feature modern audio and lighting equipment, a new DJ booth, luxury lounge, and updated terrace area.

A new Latin-inspired restaurant and nightclub, Besos y Abrazos, is also set to open in spring 2025. This location offers a menu influenced by street foods around Latin America and a range of handcrafted cocktails delivering a vivid blend of tastes and sounds.
“Investment in our downtown continues to generate results for small businesses, for tourism, the hospitality industry and so many others,” said Kathy Nelson, president and CEO of the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission and Visit KC.
Mayor Lucas reflected on the transformation the district has undergone over time, remembering a period when it was quite different. He commented that this specific location was different 20 years ago. Actually, a handful of the haunted homes were right here, Mayor Lucas recalled. One may discover almost anything, including, periodically, a bull that had escaped and gone free. Kansas City as it stands now is really unique.

Already under progress, construction aims to finish the project in time for the Big 12 events, also known as “opening day for downtown.” These improvements and new concepts, Moncke said, would not only improve the guest and resident experience but also confirm the Power & Light District as a legendary venue for world-class entertainment and hospitality.
New dining establishments like HomeGrown and Modern Market as well as the expectation of future additions like Three Dog Bakery and The Yard Milkshake Bar in 2025 indicate the expansion of the district.
This comprehensive revitalizing project is another proof of Kansas City’s continuous dedication to create a dynamic, friendly atmosphere honoring its rich cultural tapestry and athletic energy. The Power & Light District will shine even brighter on the map of must-visit worldwide entertainment venues as these developments progress.
