Springfield, Kansas City and Columbia show slight increase in guns found in carry-on luggage, TSA reports

Date:

Missouri – In Missouri, there has been a general drop in attempts to get guns on planes in carry-on baggage despite a notable increase in passenger air travel. The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) reports a drop in these types of incidents over the first half of the year.

From 104 during the same period in 2023, the TSA said that 96 weapons were found in carry-on luggage across Missouri airports during the first half of the year. While most airports reported less weapons, Columbia and Springfield saw small rises. TSA officials discovered three weapons in Columbia instead of one last year, and in Springfield the count increased to 13 from 11. St. Louis and Kansas City showed different patterns as well; St. Louis saw a drop from 51 to 37-gun findings while Kansas City showed a slight increase from 41 to 43-gun discoveries.

Positively reflecting on the general security trend, airports including Joplin, Cape Girardeau, Waynesville-St. Robert, and Kirksville reported no gun discoveries in either year.

TSA officials handling such discoveries follow a procedure whereby they find potential threats during X-ray scanning. Local airport law enforcement is quickly notified should an armed weapon be discovered to remove it and handle the matter with the passenger involved.

Travelers trying to bring weapons through airport security risk severe consequences. Along with civil fines reaching up to $15,000 per infraction, they could be subject to criminal citations or arrest. Offenders can also lose TSA PreCheck rights for five years and go through more thorough future screening.

From January 1 to June 30, the TSA observed that over 443.1 million people were screened throughout the country, up 7.3% from previous year. In Missouri, nearly 6.84 million passengers were screened, up by 7% from 2023. Missouri’s rate, one per 71,244 passengers, indicates a higher incidence rate in the state even with the national average of one gun detection per 135,560 passengers.

TSA rules strictly state that only unloaded, securely locked in a hard-sided case, and reported at the airline ticket counter guns can be carried in checked baggage. Travelers are also advised to become informed with the particular gun regulations of their destination and review airline policies on the carrying of weapons.
