Virtual session seeks community input on the future of Kansas City’s music economy

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City is encouraging residents, artists, and industry experts to help build the next chapter of its music economy through a virtual community engagement session focusing on a new global music strategy. Before the strategy moves forward, the goal of the initiative is to get input from the public.

This will ensure that local views help shape how music-related growth and collaboration happen across the city.

Participants will be able to attend the session online on Monday, January 26, at 10 a.m. Community members can attend through Zoom using a shared link or by calling in by phone. The organizers explain that the virtual format is meant to make it easy for a wide range of people to take part, such as musicians, teachers, cultural groups, and those who live in Kansas City and care about its creative future.

Creative City KC, Inc. is in charge of Kansas City’s role in the UNESCO Creative City Network, and they are putting on the event. The proposed plan intends to boost the local music economy, encourage working together with other UNESCO-designated Creative Cities, and support economic growth that comes from music and cultural activities.

The feedback collected throughout the workshop will be very important in deciding how the strategy will be carried out in a way that includes everyone and is driven by the community.

Kansas City’s ties to music have always been a big part of who it is. In 2017, it was the first city in the US to be named City of Music by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. The award brought attention to the city’s rich musical history, which includes its impact on jazz, Kansas City swing, gospel, and the blues around the world. Since then, local cultural leaders have made it a point to keep that history alive and grow it.

Creative City KC, Inc. was set up as the official UNESCO-affiliated group to handle the city’s membership and move forward with projects that fit with the Creative City purpose. The organization wants to make sure that future projects reflect both the city’s historic sound and its changing creative landscape by getting direct feedback from the community on the global music strategy.

Organizers point out that the engagement session is not just for information, but also for participation. The ideas that come up in the debate should help Kansas City figure out how to connect its musical history with opportunities to work together, get greater recognition, and have a bigger economic influence in the future.
