Governor Kehoe orders Capitol dome illuminated red for drug prevention awareness

Date:

Missouri – A familiar landmark in Jefferson City will take on a different appearance next week, carrying a message that reaches far beyond Missouri’s capital. For one night, the Missouri State Capitol dome will glow red as part of a nationwide effort to encourage drug prevention and education.

The change in lighting is more than a symbolic gesture. It is intended to remind families, schools, and communities about the importance of helping young people make healthy choices and avoid substance abuse.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has directed that the State Capitol dome be illuminated red beginning at sunset on Monday, October 26, 2026. The lighting will remain in place until sunrise on Tuesday, October 27, in recognition of Red Ribbon Week.

Observed nationwide each year from October 23 through October 31, Red Ribbon Week is recognized as the oldest and largest drug use prevention program in the United States.

The annual campaign brings attention to the importance of drug-free lifestyles while encouraging individuals and organizations to participate in prevention and awareness activities.

This year’s Capitol lighting will connect Missouri to the broader “Go Red for Red Ribbon” campaign, which invites communities, organizations, and prominent landmarks to display red lights in support of drug prevention efforts.

The campaign uses a simple but visible approach to spread its message. By illuminating public buildings and recognizable landmarks, participating communities can draw attention to an issue that affects families across the country.

Governor Kehoe emphasized that preventing drug use requires continued education and shared responsibility.

“By lighting the Capitol dome red, Missourians join communities across the country in honoring the ongoing commitment to drug prevention and education,” said Governor Kehoe.

“Red Ribbon Week serves as an important reminder of the role we all play in supporting healthy, drug-free futures for our youth.”

Beyond the Capitol lighting, the national observance also provides an opportunity for parents, teachers, and community organizations to discuss substance abuse prevention and ways to support young people.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has developed educational resources designed to help those groups participate in Red Ribbon Week and promote awareness of substance abuse.

The agency’s Red Ribbon Week resources include information and materials intended to support prevention efforts in schools, homes, and communities.

Although the Capitol dome will remain red for only one night, Red Ribbon Week continues through October 31, giving communities additional opportunities to participate in the nationwide campaign.

Missouri’s involvement places one of the state’s most recognizable government buildings at the center of that message, highlighting the importance of continued education, prevention, and community involvement in supporting drug-free futures for young people.
